I augmented my practice with ceramics and continued a series of landscape based works on copper plate, that began with French and Tasmanian landsapes. It is hard to put into words the extraordinary impact Japan, its people and its culture has had on me. The excellence and refined elegance in every single aspect of life, but especially in craftsmanship where patience and care with process is not just intrinsically honoured but imbues it’s own special properties. I feel forever altered by a new angle on which to view all things, and it came as no surprise there is a Japanese word that encapsulates this aesthetic. Shibusa is an enriched, subdued experience of intrinsically refined quality with economy of form, line and effort, producing a timeless tranquility. Shibui objects appear to be simple overall, but they include subtle details, such as textures, rough or smooth, that balance simplicity with complexity. This balance of simplicity and complexity ensures that one does not tire of a shibui object, but constantly finds new meanings and enriched beauty that cause its aesthetic value to grow over the years.&nbsp;Shibusa walks a fine line between contrasting aesthetic concepts such as elegant and rough or spontaneous and restrained. May I strive upward and onward to shibusa in all things. Adapting as a painter to significantly different light and impressions from Australia, I chose to enter the European conversation at the beginning of the Western narrative, delving into myth and archetypes. Driven by an impluse to push my established landscape motifs towards a more painterly direction, my first works in cold wax were rooted in the representational genre. However I soon found that the unruly nature of cold wax demanded an experimental way of working and lent itself to fluid and distilled, abstraction. I chose limited palettes to create a dynamic, matt, starkness to enhance the tension between the eternal truths of archaic stories and an evolving, expressive idiom. It was not long into painting landscapes that I began painting the built environment. When I found a trove of old kodachrome slides that my father took during his travels through Italian Hill towns in 1962, I painted a series based on his beautifully composed photos and added vedute from beloved places I have lived and travelled to. When the time came to title these works I decided it was apt to marry the 2 paths I have followed. The first 20 years of my adult life were spent learning and then teaching meditation. This chapter, as a painter, is built on those years of ‘research’ into the transcendent and it seemed apt to title many of these works with verses from The Upanishads - which imparts the timeless wisdom of Rishis, who devoted their lives to the cognition of reality and the exposition of Truth about the nature of manifest and unmanifest creation.&nbsp;These ancient texts are part of the vast
